Manali in December: Weather, Snowfall, Places to Visit and Trip Cost

December is when Manali turns into a proper winter destination. Days are crisp and sunny, nights drop below freezing, and the slopes of Solang Valley, Gulaba and Sissu are usually white by mid-to-late December. If you have been dreaming of your first real snow trip in India, this is one of the easiest places to make it happen.

But December in Manali is also misunderstood. Many travellers arrive expecting the whole town buried in snow, only to find dry streets and snow 15 to 40 km away. This guide sets the right expectations and gives you everything you need to plan well: what the weather is really like, where you will find snow, which places are open, what the trip costs and how to stay safe.

Manali in December at a glance

TemperatureRoughly -5°C at night to 10–15°C on sunny afternoons in town
Snowfall in Manali townPossible, but not guaranteed; often arrives in the last week of December or January

In short: go in the first two weeks of December for fewer crowds and better prices, or in the last week if snow and the New Year atmosphere matter more to you than quiet roads.

What is the weather like in Manali in December?

Manali in December is cold, dry and mostly sunny, with temperatures ranging from about -5°C at night to 6–15°C during the day in town. The higher you go, the colder it gets. Solang Valley and Sissu sit well below zero for most of the day.

Here is what that feels like on the ground:

  • Mornings (6–9 am): Frosty and sharp. Puddles freeze, car windows ice over and the first hours outdoors call for full layers.
  • Afternoons (11 am–3 pm): Pleasant in the sun. Many travellers walk Mall Road in a sweater and light jacket.
  • Evenings and nights: Temperature falls quickly after sunset, around 5 pm. This is when heaters and hot water matter most.

December weather also varies a lot from year to year. In December 2025, IMD recorded a maximum of 18.4°C in Manali on 15 December, and the town saw no snowfall on Christmas Day. Other years have brought heavy snow before Christmas. Treat any "guaranteed snow" promise with caution.

Temperature by location (typical December range)

PlaceAltitudeDayNight
Manali town~2,050 m6–15°C-2 to -5°C
Solang Valley~2,500 m0–6°C-5 to -8°C
Atal Tunnel / Sissu~3,060 m-2 to 3°C-8 to -12°C

Figures are approximate seasonal ranges; always check the IMD forecast a few days before you travel.

Does it snow in Manali in December?

Yes, but snowfall in Manali town is not guaranteed in December. It depends on western disturbances, the weather systems that bring snow to the Himalaya. When one arrives, the town can get a fresh layer overnight. When it doesn't, the snow stays on the higher slopes.

The good news: even in a dry December, you will almost always find snow within an hour's drive of Manali.

Where to find snow in December

  1. Solang Valley (13 km): The most reliable snow point near town, usually snow-covered from mid-December. Skiing, snow tubing and ropeway rides operate here.
  2. Gulaba (about 20 km): On the old Rohtang road. A quieter alternative to Solang when it has snow.
  3. Atal Tunnel South Portal (about 25 km): At over 3,000 m, the approach is often snowbound.
  4. Sissu, Lahaul (about 40 km via Atal Tunnel): Open, wide snowfields and a frozen waterfall. Often the best snow experience in December, when the road is open to tourists.

When is snow most likely?

  • 1–15 December: Snow mainly at Solang and beyond. Town is usually dry.
  • 16–31 December: Higher chance of fresh snowfall in town, especially in the last week.
  • January: Peak snow month for Manali town.

Tip: Watch the IMD Himachal forecast for an "active western disturbance" 3–5 days before travel. Fresh snow usually follows within a day or two. Roads are often closed for a day after heavy snow, so keep one buffer day in your plan.

Best places to visit in Manali in December

Most of Manali's main sights stay open in December. The only big name you will miss is Rohtang Pass, which is usually closed to tourists from December to April. Here are the places worth your time.

In and around Manali town

  • Hadimba Devi Temple: A 16th-century wooden temple inside a deodar forest. Beautiful after snowfall, and best visited early in the morning before tour groups arrive.
  • Old Manali: Narrow lanes, apple orchards and cosy cafés with wood-fired heaters. A good place to spend an unhurried afternoon.
  • Mall Road: The town's main market for woollens, Kullu shawls, dry fruits and local snacks. Lively in the evenings, packed during Christmas week.
  • Vashisht Village and Hot Springs: Natural hot water springs about 3 km from town. A dip here feels especially good in cold weather.
  • Van Vihar and the Tibetan Monastery: Easy, short stops near Mall Road for a slow first day.

Snow destinations (half or full day)

  • Solang Valley: The winter activity hub, with skiing, snowboarding, snow scooters and the Solang ropeway.
  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu: Drive through the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel to reach the Lahaul side, where snowfields stretch wide and the views are dramatic. No Rohtang permit is needed for this route.
  • Gulaba: A snow point on the Rohtang road, open up to the barrier when weather allows.

Day trips from Manali

  • Naggar Castle (about 21 km): A 500-year-old castle with views over the Kullu Valley, plus the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery nearby.
  • Kullu and Manikaran Sahib (about 80 km): A gurdwara and temple known for its hot springs and free langar. Can be combined with Kasol for a long day.
  • Sethan Village (about 12 km): A small Buddhist village known for igloo stays and snow walks when there is enough snowfall.

Things to do in Manali in December

December is the start of Manali's snow-sports season, and there is plenty to do even on days without fresh snowfall.

  • Skiing and snowboarding at Solang: Beginners can take a short lesson with a local instructor; equipment is available on rent at the base.
  • Snow tubing and snow scooter rides: Fun for families and first-timers. Agree on the price and duration before you start.
  • Paragliding: Operates at Solang on clear days, depending on wind and weather.
  • Igloo stay or snow camping: Available around Sethan and Hamta when there is enough snow. Book only with operators who provide proper sleeping gear.
  • Café hopping in Old Manali: Hot thukpa, Himachali siddu, trout and apple pie are local winter favourites.
  • Christmas and New Year celebrations: Hotels and cafés host bonfires, live music and special dinners. Book these early, as they sell out.
  • Shopping for woollens: Kullu shawls, caps and hand-knitted socks make useful and authentic souvenirs.

Safety note: Snow activity rates are not fixed officially and vary by operator. Use registered operators, check the equipment, and avoid activities when visibility is poor.

How to reach Manali in December

The easiest way to reach Manali in December is an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh. Manali is about 550 km from Delhi and the journey takes 12–14 hours.

Fares rise sharply from 20 December to 2 January. Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead for that window.

Road conditions to keep in mind

  • Bhuntar flights are weather-sensitive and get cancelled when visibility drops. Chandigarh airport is a more reliable backup.
  • Fog in the plains of Punjab and Haryana can slow down overnight buses in late December.
  • Traffic jams are common during Christmas and New Year. In 2025, more than 33,500 vehicles entered Manali between 1 and 27 December, with jams at the town entrance, Old Manali road and the Leh highway.
  • After snowfall, roads beyond Solang may be closed or limited to 4x4 vehicles. Hire a locally experienced driver rather than driving your own car on ice.

Do you need a permit in December?

No permit is needed for Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel or Sissu. The Rohtang Pass permit (₹550 per vehicle) applies only when the pass is open, which is usually from mid-May to late November. Tourist movement through the Atal Tunnel can still be stopped by police on snowy or icy days, so check the status locally each morning.

How much does a Manali trip cost in December?

A 4-night, 5-day Manali trip from Delhi in December costs roughly ₹8,000–₹12,000 per person on a budget, ₹15,000–₹22,000 for mid-range comfort and ₹25,000 or more for a premium stay. Prices climb 30–50% during Christmas and New Year week.

How to save money

A 5-day Manali itinerary for December

This plan keeps the first day light for acclimatisation, puts the snow days in the middle and leaves room for a weather delay.

  1. Day 0 – Overnight journey: Board an evening Volvo from Delhi or Chandigarh.
  2. Day 1 – Arrive and settle in: Check in, rest, then visit Hadimba Devi Temple, Van Vihar and the Tibetan Monastery. Evening on Mall Road.
  3. Day 2 – Solang Valley: Leave early to beat the traffic. Spend the day skiing, snow tubing or riding the ropeway. Evening at the Vashisht hot springs.
  4. Day 3 – Atal Tunnel and Sissu: Full-day snow trip to the Lahaul side, if tourist movement is allowed. If the road is closed, swap with Gulaba or Sethan.
  5. Day 4 – Naggar and Old Manali: Visit Naggar Castle and the Roerich Gallery, then spend the evening in Old Manali's cafés.
  6. Day 5 – Buffer and departure: Keep the morning free for shopping or a missed activity. Board the evening Volvo back.

Travelling with more time? Add Kasol and Manikaran Sahib as a sixth day.

What to pack for Manali in December

Pack in layers. A thermal base, a fleece or sweater and a windproof down jacket will keep you comfortable from sunny Mall Road to sub-zero Sissu.

  • ☐ Thermal inner wear (top and bottom), two sets
  • ☐ Fleece or woollen sweater
  • ☐ Down or padded jacket with a hood
  • ☐ Woollen cap, gloves and a muffler
  • ☐ Woollen socks and waterproof shoes with good grip
  • ☐ Sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen (snow glare is strong)
  • ☐ Lip balm and moisturiser for dry, cold air
  • ☐ Personal medicines, including motion-sickness tablets for the mountain roads
  • ☐ Power bank (batteries drain faster in the cold)
  • ☐ Cash, as ATMs and card networks can fail at snow points

Safety tips for a December trip

  • Keep a buffer day. Snowfall can close roads for 24 hours or more.
  • Check road status every morning with your hotel or driver before heading to Solang, the Atal Tunnel or Sissu.
  • Start early. Roads to snow points jam by 10 am in peak weeks.
  • Avoid self-driving on ice unless your car has snow chains and you have mountain experience.
  • Stay hydrated. Cold air hides dehydration, especially at Sissu's altitude.
  • Respect the snow. Don't walk onto unmarked slopes or frozen streams.
